Calvin E. Megargel

Calvin E. “Cal” Megargel, 87, of 1201 Avenue F Riverside PA went home to be with his Lord on Monday, May 20, 2013 at Bloomsburg Health Care Center Bloomsburg PA. He was born July 20, 1925 in Waymart PA the son of the late Harvey and Celia Zillazuski Megargel. 

He resided in Montour County for the past 79 years.  He attended Valley Township Consolidated School and graduated from the 8th grade in 1940 receiving the American Legion Honor and Leadership Award.  He attended the Danville Area High School and graduated with the Class of 1944.  Cal was one of four brothers who served in the United States Army in the European Theatre.  He was attached to the 42nd Rainbow Division in Germany and in Austria. 

Cal had been a member for more than 69 years of the Mausdale Christian Church serving on the Church Board and also filled the pulpit in the absence of the pastor.  He served as Vice President of Danville Little League for approximately 15 years.  He managed and coached the CATV Little League team for 18 years.  Cal organized and was President of the Danville Little League Boosters where he was instrumental in the building of the Washies Little League Field.  He was presented with an award for 18 years of dedicated service by the Little League in 1975. 

He served as School Director of Valley Township Consolidated School and the Danville Area School Board.  Cal was President of the Valley Board and Vice President on the Joint Board.  While serving on the Joint Board, he served on the following committees:  Personnel, Property, Finance, and Policy and he chaired the School Supply Committee.  While serving on the finance committee, he helped organize the Danville Area Earned Income Tax.  He also served as Chairman on the Earned Income Tax Committee.  Cal served as Co-Chairman on the 1970 White House Youth Conference.  He was a member and Past President of the TRW Toastermaster Club.  He served as President of the TRW Toastmasters International Youth Leadership Program at the Danville Area High School for several years.

He was a life member of the Danville American Legion Post No. 40 where he served for several years as Chairman of the Danville Legion Youth Oratorial Contest Committee.  He was the main speaker in 1969 when the Danville Legion celebrated its Golden Anniversary.  He served as Co-Chairman of the American Legion “Back to God” Dinners for at least four years.  He served some time as Treasurer of the American Legion Baseball Team.

Cal was affiliated with scouting and served as a Committee Member, Boy Scout Troop No. 66.  He was a member of the Big Brothers Organization serving on the Executive Committee and as a Big Brother.

While working at TRW he was a member of the Susquehanna Valley Management Club.  He was a member of the Danville-Mahoning Lodge # 224 F & AM and a life member of the Danville Elks Club.

He was a life member and Past Commander of the Danville VFW Post 298.  He served on the Valley Township Planning Committee and was a member of the Valley Township Fire Company No. 1.  He was also a member of the Danville Alumni Association.

Cal retired from TRW in Danville after 34 years of service.  He worked as a Supply Clerk, Inventory Controller and Buyer.  He was also Supervisor of Central Supply and Purchasing Department.  

After retiring he was elected Supervisor of Valley Township where he served two six- year terms and two years of his third term.  In 2000, due to moving out of the Township, he resigned as Supervisor of Valley Township.  While Supervisor, he served as Chairman of the Board.  He served three years which was 1990, 1991 and 1992 as Chairman of the Montour County Association of Township Supervisors.  As Chairman of this Association, and with the help of the Pennsylvania Department of Community Affairs, he formed the Montour County Council of Government which is known as COG.  He served as Chairman of COG for several years.

Cal was an avid golfer, outdoorsman and was an avid sports fan.  He enjoyed gardening and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 49 years, Irene Bennett Megargel.  He is survived by one son, Eric B. Megargel, a retired teacher of the Danville Area High School, and his wife Jeannie and their son, Taylor B. Megargel.   His other son, Terry E. Megargel preceded him in death.  Terry’s wife, Kim Megargel and their children; Brett and Greg also survive him.  Also surviving are three great-grandchildren; Katelyn Morgan, Natalie Anne and Allie Grace Megargel; daughters of Greg and Anne Megargel. 

Cal married Anna Hare Morris Megargel on July 20, 1998.  They have resided in Riverside for the past 13 years.  He is survived by one stepdaughter, Deb Morris and one stepson, Rick Morris and his wife Kim.  Also surviving are two step-granddaughters; Sara Curry and Lindsay Starr.  Also surviving are two sisters; Myrtle George and Jessie Winter and her husband Lyle.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers; James, Earl and Joseph Megargel.

The family will have a private memorial service. A Celebration of Cal’s Life will be announced at a later date.
