George William Smith

George William Smith, 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 31, 2018 at Geisinger Medical Center Danville PA.  He was born on October 30, 1926 in Hazleton PA, the son of the late William G. and Emma E. Goyne Smith. 

He graduated from Danville High School in 1944.  George served his country in the US Army during World War II. 

He was married for 65 years to the late Alice May Wendel Smith who preceded him in death June 26, 2015.  They were married on March 29, 1950.  

George was employed at KVS before becoming a partner at  Smith Machine Works from 1960-1975 and subsequently with his son at  Smith Sporting Goods Store from 1971-1982. 

George was a member of Shiloh United Church of Christ since 1948.  He was a Past Master and member of Mahoning Lodge #224 F & M, member of the Caldwell Consistory, Danville Royal Arch Chapter No. 239, Zembo Shrine in Harrisburg PA, Past President of the Sunbury Shrine Club, Charter member of the Sunbury Shrine Club Motor Corp., Life Member of American Legion Post 40, Danville.  He was Honorary member of

Danville Rod and Gun Club, Past President of Danville Businessmenís Association, former 50-year member of Danville Elks 754, Past Master of Travel for North Central Camping Club.  From 1970-1973, he was on the Board of Trustees at Danville State Hospital.   

He enjoyed woodworking and especially loved traveling with his wife to 44 States. George was a selfless caregiver to his wife for many years treating her with much love and dignity.  George will be remembered by many for his friendliness to all and his ability to make friends wherever he went and will be greatly missed by them as well as his family. 

He is survived by one son, George Smith, Jr. and his wife Kathy of Riverside PA; and two daughters; Louise Warfield of Magnolia Delaware and Barbara Leighow and her husband Michael of Muncy PA.  He is also survived by 4 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and one step-granddaughter.  Also surviving is one sister, Mary Smith of Ann Arbor MI as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Smith of Lewisburg. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service to be held Tuesday, February 6th at 11:00 AM at Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 42 West Mahoning Street Danville PA with the Reverend Mary B. Schmotzer officiating.  Burial will follow at Elan Memorial Park in Bloomsburg PA.  Friends will be received from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM when the Masonic services will be held.   Military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 40 Honor Guard  

The family will provide flowers.  Memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh United Church of Christ Kenya Fund 512 Bloom Road Danville PA or the Shrinerís Hospital for Children 3551 North Broad Street Philadelphia PA 19140 or online at www.ShrinersHospital.org./donate.
