William Fred Hess, 84, of Danville PA passed away Saturday, April 7, 2018
at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village in Lewisburg PA. He was born October
2, 1933 in Lemoyne PA the son of the late Richard H. and Sara Lutz Hess.
married for 62 years to Ann Coulson Hess. They were married on August 15,
graduated from Lemoyne High School in 1951 and Albright College in 1955.
employed as an Aquatic and Physical Director at the YMCA in York PA and
Johnstown PA from 1955 to 1963. As the Executive Director, he established
the Central Brevard YMCA in Cocoa FL in 1963 and remained there until 1973.
He subsequently became the Packing House Manager for Harvey’s Groves in 1973
until he began the same job at Hale’s Groves in 1987, from where he retired
in 2002. Leaving the Quaker state, he became a Florida Cracker for 51 years
but returned to his Pennsylvania roots in November 2014.
was a founding Elder of the First Christian Church in Cocoa FL where he
served from 1963 – 1987, when they helped establish the Sebastian Christian
Church where he served as Elder from 1987 – 2014. He was an active Sunday
School teacher throughout his adult life.
memberships included The Kiwanis Club in Sebastian FL and in Cocoa FL where
he was Chairman of the Blood Bank and, himself, a 10 plus gallon donor. He
was also a member of the Brevard Masonic Lodge where he was an advisor to
the local high school DeMolay International. Fred was also a member of the
Florida Citrus Growers Association and a member of the Twin Fawn Hunting
Club., Trout Run PA.
thoroughly enjoyed all sports, his favorite being football, where he
excelled as an offensive and defensive tackle with several professional
offers to play. He relished in the outdoors, especially with hunting,
fishing and camping as his escape and enjoyment. Diving for lobster in the
Florida Keys was a passion he shared with special friends and family who
often heard him quote “We’re having Some Fun now!”
greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family. Fred taught
all his boys to swim, hunt and fish. Fred also taught his sons’ wives to
fish as well as his grandchildren, all of whom he adored.
addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons; Dr. W. Fred Hess, M.D.
and his wife Heather of Danville PA; Jeffrey R. Hess and his wife Kathy of
Portland IN; Mike J. Hess and his wife Patricia and Jacob A. Hess and his
fiancé Stephanie Clement, all of Sebastian FL. Also surviving are nine
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
also survived by one brother; Richard J. Hess and his wife Delores of
Mechanicsburg PA and one sister in law, Constance Coulson and his
brother-in-law William L. Coulson and his wife Patricia; all of Virginia
Beach VA, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Fred’s Life to
be held on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church of
Danville 12 Brookside Drive (off 642 E) with the Reverend Dawes J. Dunham
and the Rev. Dr. Harry H. Wonderland officiating. Friends will be received
from 1:30 PM to 2:45 PM.
Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
