Carl E. "Chub" Sponenberg

December 11, 2018

Carl E. “Chub” Sponenberg, 86, formerly of Danville, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the home of his son and daughter-in-law in Greenwood, South Carolina.  He was born October 14, 1932 in Benton PA, the son of the late Griffith and Vivian Shultz Sponenberg.

Carl graduated from Berwick High School in 1950 and then enlisted in the United States Army where he fought in the Korean War.  He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars and the UN Service Medal.  He was last employed as a materials engineer with PennDot (never missing a day of work.)

He was married for 54 years to the late S. Ann Udelhofen Sponenberg who preceded him in death on November 4, 2004.

He enjoyed camping with his wife, spending time with family and thoroughly enjoyed Winters at their condo in Daytona Beach FL where they met lots of new friends.  Carl was at his happiest sitting on his Allis Chalmers tractor and farming.  He loved dogs, especially Dalmatians.  His children all helped him bail hay, feed animals, gather eggs and anything else their Dad needed to be done.  He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church Danville PA, the Caldwell Consistory, Danville-Mahoning Lodge #224 F & AM, Danville American Legion, Loyal Order of Moose, VFW, and the Washies and East End Fire Companies.

He is survived by one son, Kevin Sponenberg and his wife Diane of Greenwood SC and four daughters; Carla Graham and her husband Thomas; Debra Walter and her husband Richard; Holly Greenly and her husband Bill and Jan Hendrickson; all of Danville PA.  Also surviving are ten grandchildren; Matthew and Andrew Graham, Erin Feist, Alec Herman, Ryan and Kaitlyn Greenly, Taylor Hendrickson, Grier, Griffin and Garrett Sponenberg and two great-grandchildren; Leah Graham and Sullivan Feist.  He is also survived by one brother Sam Sponenberg and his wife Rosalee of Somerville NJ and his brother-in-law, Carl Bower of Berwick PA as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Carl, who was in failing health, resided in South Carolina for the past eight years with his son, Kevin and daughter-in-law, Diane and their sons.  Carl became especially close to a friend of Kevin’s, Jeff Lench, whom he considered to be a second son.  Jeff, Kevin and Carl spent many days talking, tending to the garden, and enjoying the wonderful South Carolina weather.

Carl and Ann’s children had promised to their parents that they would never have to enter a nursing home.  They fulfilled that promise because of their daughter-in-law, son and boys.  Diane gave selflessly of herself for the loving care she provided to Carl.  The Sponenberg family feel they have been truly blessed to have Diane as part of their family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services to be held on Friday, December 14, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church 215 East Market Street Danville PA with the Reverend Trevor J. Hahn officiating.  Friends will be received from 12:30 PM until 1:45 PM.  Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery Danville PA.  Military Rites will be accorded by the Montour County Veterans. The family will provide flowers.

Memorial contributions in Carl’s memory may be made to Hospice of South Carolina 326 Montague Avenue Greenwood SC  29646, Alzheimer’s Association 57 N. Franklin Street Wilkes-Barre PA  18701-1309 or the Animal Resource Center PO Box 439 Bloomsburg PA  17815.
