Calvin J. Heddings

Calvin J. Heddings, 92, of Danville PA passed away Thursday, May 4, 2017 at his residence.  He was born November 16, 1924 in Pottsgrove PA the son of the late John and Mary Robenolt Heddings.  He was married for 69 ½ years to Shirley T. Young Heddings.  They were married on December 28, 1947.

He graduated from Milton High School in 1943 with perfect attendance for six years.

He served his country in the United States Navy as a combat veteran during World War II on the LSM and LST landing crafts.

Calvin was employed as a machinist for TRW Danville PA for 35 years, retiring in 1987.

He was an active member of St. James (Ridgeville) United Church of Christ Danville PA. Calvin served on the Danville Area School District School Board from 1957-1969, his last two years serving as President.  He was a committed and dedicated Danville Little League Coach for over two decades for TRW and later for Continental.  His sons were honored and privileged to have him as their coach.  He was also an Honorary Member of the Friendship Fire Company in Danville PA. 

Calvin was never idle in his life and displayed that with his avid vegetable gardening, meticulous lawn work, along with harvesting English Walnuts with victorious battles with the squirrels.  His love and his skill for bowling was notable.  He bowled up until the time of his death and within the last six months achieved a 600 match. He also enjoyed camping.  His woodworking skills were evident throughout his home of 69 1/2 years and his children’s homes with kitchen cabinets and various pieces he designed and built with great attention to detail.  When he was idle, Calvin was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan and always enjoyed their games and especially enjoyed watching Western movies with his family.  A spirited and tenderhearted man, Calvin especially enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he adored.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons; John J. “Jay” Heddings and his wife Daryl of Bloomsburg PA and Matthew T. Heddings and his wife Carrie of Plantsville CT and two daughters; D. Jane Baer of Danville PA and Jolene “Jody” McDonald and her husband John of Seven Valleys PA.  He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren along with one great-great-grandchild. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive him.   Also surviving are two sisters; Ida Wagner of Northumberland PA and Mary Acor of Florida.  He was preceded in death by four brothers; Luther, Graydon, Raymond and Sydney and two sisters; Pearl Koch and Alda Black.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Calvin’s Life to be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at 2:00 PM at St. James (Ridgeville) United Church of Christ 2507 Bloom Road Danville PA with the Reverend Richard J. Shearer officiating.  Friends will be received from 12:00 Noon until 1:45 PM.   Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery Danville PA.    Military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 40 Honor Guard.

The family will provide flowers.  Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
