Elizabeth Simington Scott, 104, of Williamsburg VA passed away peacefully
Friday, April 14, 2017 in Williamsburg VA. She was born November 4, 1912 in
the old stone house at Simington Farm, just west of Mooresburg, Montour
County, PA, the first child and eldest daughter of the late William
McClanathan and Alice B. Bower Simington.
was married for 57 ˝ years to Dr. Ralston D. Scott who preceded her in death
on March 2, 1999. They were married September 1, 1941 on the front porch of
the Simington family homestead in Mooresburg PA.
graduated from Danville High School in 1931 and from Hood College in
Frederick MD with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work in 1935. Her
employment included working at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia for
five years, worked as a social worker for an adoption agency, and a home
care agency. Anne also worked in Illinois placing children in adoptive
homes from an orphanage run by a small mid-western denomination called “The
Christian Church”. While there, she got involved with unwed mothers who
were willing to put their babies up for adoption through the agency. She
even went to court with the girls to see the legal work fully complied
with. She continued doing this until she retired.
Wherever Anne lived, she was actively involved in the Daughters of the
American Revolution where she served as Regent for two local Chapters.
Everywhere she and her husband moved, they joined the local Presbyterian
Church which they attended and supported faithfully. When women first
became eligible for offices in the denomination, Anne was elected Deacon in
the Edwardsville Presbyterian Church in Illinois. In Williamsburg, she
continued to be active in her church women’s circle as long as she was able
to get there. She also volunteered at FISH, a church related food and
clothing exchange for folks in need.
had such a compassionate and selfless heart for so many people evidenced by
her volunteer work with Brownies and volunteering at local thrift shops.
She served patiently as her husband’s primary caregiver when her husband’s
health started to deteriorate, dedicating herself completely to his needs
retirement and while still healthy, she and her husband took numerous trips
in the US and abroad to such places as England, Wales, France, Germany,
Italy, Russia, China, Australia and New Zealand. They spent winters in
Florida, Hawaii and Mexico.
is survived by one son, William, of Richmond VA and one daughter, Linda, and
her husband, Randy W. Hackenburg of Boiling Springs PA. Also surviving are
two grandchildren; Elizabeth Ann Graham and her husband Craig of Williston
ND and Scott Hackenburg and his wife Cora of Richmond VA. She is also
survived by two great-grandchildren; Elliot V. Graham and Justin Hackenburg.
Also surviving are two brothers; David Simington and Paul Simington along
with two sisters; Mary Johnson and Martha Cole. In addition to her husband,
she was preceded in death by two brothers; William Bower Simington and
Joseph Oakley Simington.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service to be held
Friday, May 12 2017 at 11:00 AM at Odd Fellows Cemetery 1402 Bloom Road
Danville PA with the Reverend John Shaw officiating. The family will
provide flowers. Memorial Contributions may be made to Mooresburg
