Ruth A. Burkland

August 9, 2017

Ruth A. Burkland, 78, of Riverside passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 surrounded in love by her family.  While she lived with cancer the last 11 years of her life, she never let it stop her from doing what she wanted to do; she enjoyed life. So in the end, she won. Along with her husband Theodore (Chick) of 57 years, she had some wonderful adventures: visiting all 50 states, flying in a helicopter to a glacier, zip-lining in Jamaica, mule riding in the canyons of Utah, meeting President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter, a cross country train trip, and so many others.  But her greatest joy was being with her family.

Ruth was a nurse by temperament and profession, she was the first to receive her diploma in the first LPN nursing class in Danville in 1967. She worked at Geisinger in Danville for 27 years.  Ruth saw their oldest grandchildren graduate from college and had the satisfaction of knowing that the youngest is following in her footsteps by studying nursing.

A champion bowler, Ruth was part of the Danville High School team that won the state title in 1957.  She bowled in the Moose and local church leagues for many years.  While not especially a sports fan, she traveled far and wide for countless games and matches of all sports, whatever her children or grandchildren were playing.  She rooted for any team they rooted for.

Born at home in Riverside to Norman and Martha Stine, Ruth graduated from Danville High School in 1957.  She worked at Bell Telephone in Philadelphia for two years after high school and after marrying in 1959, joined her husband in Rhode Island during his military service.  She returned to Riverside in 1961.  Ruth was a lifelong member of St. Peterís United Methodist Church in Riverside.

In addition to her husband, Ruth leaves two children, Mary Ann Burkland and Ed Burkland, three grandchildren, Alexis Burkland, Sam Johansson, Emily Burkland, one sister and brother-in-law Jean and Bob Spangenberg, aunt Irene Burr of Layton, Utah, uncle Robert Stine (Vera) of Riverside, several nieces and nephews, and many great friends.  She was, as is her family, appreciative of the care and support she received from her doctors and nurses throughout her illness.  She will be missed.

A Celebration of Ruthís life will be held on Saturday August 12, 2017 at 11:00am with visitation from 9:00-10:45 at St. Peterís United Methodist Church 240 Sunbury Road Riverside PA.  Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery Danville PA.  Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to Geisinger Home Health and Hospice 410 Glenn Avenue Suite 200 Bloomsburg PA  17815.
