A. Burkland, 78, of Riverside passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2017
surrounded in love by her family. While she lived with cancer the last 11
years of her life, she never let it stop her from doing what she wanted to
do; she enjoyed life. So in the end, she won. Along with her husband
Theodore (Chick) of 57 years, she had some wonderful adventures: visiting
all 50 states, flying in a helicopter to a glacier, zip-lining in Jamaica,
mule riding in the canyons of Utah, meeting President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter,
a cross country train trip, and so many others. But her greatest joy was
being with her family.
was a nurse by temperament and profession, she was the first to receive her
diploma in the first LPN nursing class in Danville in 1967. She worked at
Geisinger in Danville for 27 years.
Ruth saw their oldest grandchildren graduate from college and had the
satisfaction of knowing that the youngest is following in her footsteps by
champion bowler, Ruth was part of the Danville High School team that won the
state title in 1957. She bowled in the Moose and local church leagues for
many years. While not especially a sports fan, she traveled far and wide
for countless games and matches of all sports, whatever her children or
grandchildren were playing. She rooted for any team they rooted for.
at home in Riverside to Norman and Martha Stine, Ruth graduated from
Danville High School in 1957. She worked at Bell Telephone in Philadelphia
for two years after high school and after marrying in 1959, joined her
husband in Rhode Island during his military service. She returned to
Riverside in 1961. Ruth was a lifelong member of St. Peterís United
Methodist Church in Riverside.
addition to her husband, Ruth leaves two children, Mary Ann Burkland and Ed
Burkland, three grandchildren, Alexis Burkland, Sam Johansson, Emily
Burkland, one sister and brother-in-law Jean and Bob Spangenberg, aunt Irene
Burr of Layton, Utah, uncle Robert Stine (Vera) of Riverside, several nieces
and nephews, and many great friends. She was, as is her family,
appreciative of the care and support she received from her doctors and
nurses throughout her illness. She will be missed.
Celebration of Ruthís life will be held on Saturday August 12, 2017 at
11:00am with visitation from 9:00-10:45 at St. Peterís United Methodist
Church 240 Sunbury Road Riverside PA. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows
Cemetery Danville PA. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or
to Geisinger Home Health and Hospice 410 Glenn Avenue Suite 200 Bloomsburg
