Lionel Smeltzer

January 30, 2017

Lionel Smeltzer, 92, of 67 Pepper Hills Danville PA passed away peacefully Saturday, January 28, 2017 at his home with his daughter by his side.  He was born August 15, 1924 in Shamokin PA the son of the late Howard and Lillian Johns Smeltzer.

Lionel was a devoted husband to the late Ruth Hummer Smeltzer who preceded him in death on June 7, 2007.  They were married on April 30, 1948.

He graduated from Shamokin High School.

Lionel served his country for four years in the United States Army, stationed in Italy.

He retired from the Danville State Hospital as an Occupational Therapist.

He was a member of Evangelical Church in Shamokin PA.

Lionel enjoyed hunting and fishing and traveling to Canada to catch those “big fish”.  He loved shopping at the malls with his girls.  His greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family, always looking forward to Sunday visits from his sons and grandsons.  He loved the holidays when the home was filled with his children, grandchildren and lots of laughter.  Recently, he became a great-grandfather to Noel Bachman whom he loved dearly. She loved her Pop-pop.

He is survived by two sons; Mark and Kevin Smeltzer and two daughters; Sharon Smeltzer and Debra Bachman and her husband Dave; all of Danville PA.

Also surviving are six grandchildren; Zachary Bachman, Zebula Smeltzer, Jeremiah Smeltzer, Kaelah Smeltzer, Kodey Smeltzer and Kevin Smeltzer and one great-granddaughter, Noel Bachman.  He is also survived by one brother, Ronald Smeltzer and his wife Barbara of Danville PA and one niece.  In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Burton Smeltzer on February 7, 1981.

Since his wife’s passing in 2007, his daughters Sharon and Debbie were with him every day.  Not a day went by that he did not thank them for taking such good care of him.

An extraordinary thank you is extended to Debbie for being able to care for Dad at home.  Without her, it would have been impossible.  Thank you also to Dr. Rob Meloy, who was always there for Dad and for all the calls he received day and night.  Thank you also to Martha Kitchen, Dr. Norfolk and Dr. Klemens from the Justin Drive Dialysis Unit who faithfully watched over Dad the last eight years.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Lionel’s life  to be held on Thursday, February 2, 2017  at 1:00 PM  at Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 West Mahoning Street Danville PA with Pastor Greg Molter officiating,  Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery Danville PA.   Friends will be received from 12:00 Noon until the time of the service.  Military Rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 40 Honor Guard.
