Grace S. Cope

October 5, 2017

Grace S. Cope, 90, of Danville PA passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at the Emmanuel Residential Nursing Center, with her family by her side in Danville PA.  The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Emmanuel for their love and care for Grace while she was a resident.

Grace was born on August 11, 1927 in Shamokin PA as the daughter of the late Harold H. and Lydia Kramer Smith.

Grace graduated from Shamokin High School in May 1945 and received her RN Degree in September 1948 from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia PA, where she was enrolled in the Cadet Nursing Program, being trained to be a nurse during World War II.

She was married on May 29, 1953 to World War II Army veteran Robert John Cope, who passed away on April 19, 1969, while on active military duty.

She was employed as a registered nurse at Geisinger Medical Center from 1948-1958, working alongside Dr. Leonard Bush, M.D.  She later worked for several years as a nursing supervisor for North Central Secure Treatment Unit in Danville PA, as a substitute nurse in the Danville School system and conducted medical exams for Prudential Insurance.

Grace was always offering her help and beautiful smile to those she felt needed it the most. One of her volunteer services where she touched many lives was in assisting the elderly with preparation of their tax forms.

Grace was also well known for her involvement in the Republican party and officially as the first female Republican Chairman for Montour County.

Her passion in life was caring for others.  She loved to read, use her sense of humor, play games, knit and look for a bargain at yard sales. She enjoyed to travel; camp with her children, take bus trips with friends and family and explore some favorite parts of the world.  Above all, her family was her greatest joy in life. She leaves a legacy of love and kindness that will continue to live through the lives she has touched in so many ways.

She is survived by two sons; Richard D. Cope and his wife Lisa of Lovettsville VA and Edward J. Cope and his wife Sonja “Michele” of Danville PA and one daughter; Ann E. Cope of Charlotte NC.  Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren, whom she adored.  She is also survived by one sister, Betty Hood and her husband, Palmer Hood of Bensalem, PA.  Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service to be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 12 noon at Odd Fellows Cemetery 1402 Bloom Road Danville PA.  The family will provide flowers. Memorial Contributions may be made to Thomas Beaver Free Library, 205 Ferry Street, Danville, PA 17821.
