Dorothy I. Hackenberg

Dorothy I. Hackenberg, 80, of Oak Street Danville PA passed away on Monday, May 29, 2017 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA. She was born October 28, 1936 in Riverside, PA the daughter of the late Percy V. and Lily A. Summers Oberdorf.  

Dorothy was married for 43 years to the late Parvin E. Hackenberg who preceded her in death May 2, 1994. They were married on November 6, 1951. 

She attended Danville High School and Empire Beauty School in Sunbury. 

Dorothy served her community as a self-employed beautician at her home on Mahoning Street Danville PA for many years. 

She was an active member of Shiloh United Church of Christ.  Dorothy loved Danville  and said “she wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”  Her passion for Danville and it’s history was noteworthy by her service as a Co-chairman of the Montour County Historical Society Board of Directors along with being curator of the Montgomery House Museum in Danville for many years.  Dorothy was an avid collector of Danville memorabilia.   Her other memberships included the Tah Gah Jute Chapter of the D.A.R. and the Montour County Genealogical Society.   She was honored to receive “The Lady of the Year” Award presented to her by the Danville Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in 2006.

 Dorothy enjoyed antique auctions and digging old farm dumps.  Later in her life she loved reading, reminiscing with her son-in-law, researching her family tree for herself and for others.  Dorothy was also a volunteer at Geisinger Medical Center. She had a deep love for her family and especially enjoyed reading to her great-grandchildren who will miss her greatly.

She is survived by one daughter, Valerie Hoyes and her husband David of Danville PA and her daughter-in-law Kathy Hackenberg of Pittsburgh, PA.  Also surviving are her grandchildren;  Brock Hoyes and his wife Nicole; Rebecca Dressler and her husband Bob; Heath Hoyes and his wife Suzanne and Nevin Hackenberg and his wife Lauren.  She is also survived by six great-grandchildren; Jagger, Dylan and Lennon Dressler, Darby and Jonatha Hoyes and Hunter Hackenberg.  Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Keith Hackenberg and three brothers; Abe, Leon and Ralph Oberdorf. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Dorothy’s Life to be held on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Shiloh United Church of Christ, 500 Bloom Street, Danville, PA 17821 with the Reverend Mary B. Schmotzer officiating. Friends will be received from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM at the church.  Burial will be held in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville, PA. 

The family will provide flowers. Memorial Contributions may be made to the church or the Montour County Historical Society 1 Bloom Road Danville PA  17821.
