Harry E. Johns, Jr.

Harry E. Johns, Jr., 87, formerly of 190 D & H Avenue Danville PA died peacefully on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Geisinger-Bloomsburg Healthcare Center in Bloomsburg PA.  He was born July 27, 1926 in Heilwood PA the son of the late Harry E. Sr. and Effie C.  Hart Johns.  He had relocated here from Keyser WV in 2011. 

He graduated from Morgantown High School in Morgantown WV in 1944.  Mr. Johns was an Eagle Scout.  He served his country in the United States Navy as a Quartermaster on an LST#904 in the Battle of Okinawa during World War II.   Mr. Johns was employed as a supply clerk for over 30 years with Bethlehem Mines, retiring in 1980. 

He was a 50 year member of the American Legion and the VFW. 

Mr. Johns enjoyed playing the trumpet in the Marching Band for West Virginia University football games.  He also enjoyed watching football.  He was particularly proud of the fact that he personally exchanged Navy stories with President John F. Kennedy.  He also personally spoke and shook hands with President Harry Truman and Eleanor Roosevelt and met President Franklin D. Roosevelt after the Johnstown Flood of 1936. 

He was married for 52 years to the late Ann Virginia Smith Johns who preceded him in death on April 2, 2002.   They were married July 16, 1949. 

He is survived by one son, Harry E. Johns III and his wife Gwendolyn of Montgomery AL and one daughter, Helen A. Linker of Danville PA.  Also surviving are two grandchildren; Abigail M. Edwards and Aaron E. Johns; both of Montgomery AL.

He is also survived by one brother, Joseph Johns of Laurel MD.  He was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Perry. 

A Requiem Eucharist will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Christ Memorial Episcopal Church 120 East Market Street Danville PA with the Reverend Nancy Shank officiating.  Burial with full military honors will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville PA.   Arrangements are under the direction of Visneski Funeral Home, Inc 10 West Mahoning Street Danville PA 17821.  www.visneski.com
