Alfred D. DeSantis, Jr.

Alfred D. DeSantis, Jr., 77, of 717 East Market Street, Danville, PA, passed away early Sunday morning, January 26, 2014 at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He was born March 9, 1936 in Riverside, PA, the son of the late Alfred D., Sr.  and E. Mae Oberdorf  DeSantis.  

He graduated from Danville High School in 1954. Al was a veteran of the United States Navy from 1954-1958 serving in the USS Ranger. 

He was employed by Merck & Company, Riverside and also by the Danville State Hospital, where he retired in 1991. 

Al was a lifelong Danville area resident who was very devoted to his community, especially 2nd Ward.   He was very active in leadership roles leading up to his position of Fire Chief of the Washington Fire and Hose Company "Washies" of Danville PA. He was also a member of the other fire companies in Danville. Al was a past Danville Fire Chief serving on the Danville Fire Board. He was the Vice President of the Firemen Relief Association for many years. He also served on the Planning Commission and the Hazard Mitigation Commission for the Danville Area Emergency Preparedness. Al was also a member of the VFW, the Danville-Mahoning Lodge #224, a lifetime member of American Legion Post 40 and a lifetime member of the Danville Elks. 

Al was an avid Penn State football fan and was a computer enthusiast.  He was very well known for his friendliness in the community.  His greatest enjoyment was socializing with his friends and spending time with his family.  

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Beatrice E. Snyder DeSantis.  Also surviving are four sisters; Betty Ann Huber and her husband Charles and Carol J. Lewis and her husband Dennis; all of Danville PA and Gloria D. Young and her husband Keith; and Barbara K. White and her husband Robert; all of Bloomsburg, PA. Also surviving are 10 nieces and nephews. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services, Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 1:00PM from Visneski Funeral Home, Inc., 10 West Mahoning Street, Danville, PA, with Pastor Greg Molter officiating.  Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Danville.  Friends will be received from 11:00AM until the time of service.  Memorial Contributions may be made to Washington Hose and Fire Company 400 Railroad Street Danville PA 17821.  Arrangements are under the direction of Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 West Mahoning Street Danville PA.  www.visneski.com
