Simon L. Miller, Jr.

Simon L. Miller, Jr., 82, of 108 Sunset Drive Elysburg PA was welcomed into glory and into the arms of his loving Savior on Sunday, April 14, 2013.  He was born March 7, 1931 in Milton PA the son of the late S. Lorenzo, Sr. and Florence E. Boudman Miller. 

He was married for 57 years to the love of his life, the late June L. Miller who preceded him in death on October 10, 2011.  They were married February 27, 1954.

He graduated from Milton High School in 1948 where he was a multi-sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball.  He played semi-pro basketball for the Locust Gap Apollos around 1949 – 1952.  He attended Washington and Lee University.

Mr. Miller served in the United States Army from 1952-1968 where he attained the rank of Major, was in the Infantry, and was the Chief of the Flight Examiner Branch at Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia.  He served multiple tours in Vietnam. He then attended the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in Kentucky from 1968-1970 where he earned his Masters of Divinity Degree.  He served as minister of the Elysburg Presbyterian Church from 1970-1975.  He also was President of the School Board at Southern Columbia.  Mr. Miller lived in Isfahan, Iran where he was then employed by Bell Helicopter from 1976-1978 as a flight instructor for the Iranian Air Force as well as advisor to the Commanding General of the Iranian Air Force.  From 1980-1991, he was Commander of the Indiantown Gap Flight Facility where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  Mr. Miller was involved with real estate in the Elysburg area.  He also was the speaker at numerous public speaking engagements.

He was an avid golfer and won the Senior Championship at Jepko’s Three Ponds (now Knoebels).  He also played Augusta National after winning second place in the Southeastern Amateur.  Mr. Miller loved to write and authored the book, “Once Upon A Time.” 

He led his life with a purpose to bring glory to God, to love his family and to achieve as much as he could with the time the Lord gave to him.  He was well known for his impressive handshake and fine patriotism to the country he loved and served. 

He is survived by one son, Gregory S. Miller of Phoenix AZ and one daughter Tracy Miller Ray of Elysburg PA; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Mullet in 2007.  Also surviving are two sisters; Elizabeth A. Hogge of Milton PA and Patricia L. Schick of Saranac NY and her husband, William B. Schick.  In addition to his wife and daughter, he was preceded in death by one brother, George F. Miller. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of his life to be held Monday evening, May 13, 2013 at 7:00 PM at Elysburg Presbyterian Church 320 W.
