Floyd Allen Woodruff, 81

Floyd Allen Woodruff, 81, of Danville PA and Jacksonville FL, died peacefully Monday, July 9, 2012 at the home of his daughter, Karen Griffin of Danville PA. He was born April 2, 1931 in Rush Township, Northumberland County PA the son of the late Frank and Grace Cromley Woodruff. 

He attended the East River School House for seven years and graduated from Danville High School in 1948.  He attended Airplane and Engine Mechanic School at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas.  He also attended an Industrial Engineering Program through Penn State University.  Floyd was certified as an electrician and plumber. 

He served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1954 during the Korean Conflict and in the US Army Reserve 814th from 1958-1964.  From 1965-1977, he served in the PA Air National Guard 193rd TEW Group and served in the Vietnam Conflict.  He was a Master Sergeant Instructor and Flight Engineer.  While serving his country, he received numerous medals and letters of commendation including:  Vietnam Service Medal and a medal for 2,000 hours flown and he accumulated more than 4,600 hours of flight time.  During his military career, he traveled to six continents including every country in the world except Russia and all 50 States in the USA.  Mr. Woodruff was employed for 22 years at TRW, Danville PA where he was a maintenance supervisor.  He also was employed for four years at Bloomsburg Mills, Bloomsburg PA. 

Floyd was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mayberry Township, Danville PA where he served for many years as a Sunday school teacher and superintendant.  He also sang in the choir. He was a 32nd Degree Mason.  Along with his wife Ellen, he was a foster parent for 30 years.

Floyd enjoyed spending time at the beach.  He built a log home by himself.  His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family.  Floyd also spent many afternoons cooking for family, friends and neighbors at the “Red Roof” Sharp Ridge picnic grounds.

He was married for 46 years to Ellen Geary Woodruff who preceded him in death in 2007.  He is survived by one son, Keith Woodruff and his wife Angela of Danville PA and two daughters; Karen Griffin and her husband Al of Danville PA and Kaye Hrubes and her husband James of Ft. Worth TX.  He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Ward Woodruff in 1967.  He is also survived by four grandchildren; Rachael Griffin her fiancé Jason Brown and Aaron Griffin, and Katherine and Wyatt Hrubes.   He is also survived by two sisters; Elsie Hamel of Bethlehem PA and Alice Shultz of Danville PA.  In addition to his wife and son, he was preceded in death by two brothers; David and Vernon and two sisters; Ruth and Lorraine. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Floyd’s Life to be held Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 11:30 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church 29 High Road (Mayberry Township) Danville PA with the Reverend Christoph Teille and the Reverend Susan Rogutski officiating.  Friends will be received from 10:00 AM to the time of service at the church.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Military rites will be accorded by the United States Air Force Honor Guard and 193rd Special Operations Wing Base Honor Guard.  Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund.  Arrangements are under the direction of Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 W Mahoning Street Danville PA.  www.visneski.com
