Andrew P. "Andy" Hurnyak

Andrew P. “Andy” Hurnyak, 90, Danville PA went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, March 5, 2012 at Geisinger Medical Center Danville PA.  He was born June 30, 1921 in Lansford PA the son of the late Joseph and Mary Hlad Hurnyak. 

He graduated from Lansford High School in 1939 where he was Secretary of his class and participated in sports and the Forensics Club. 

Mr. Hurnyak served in the United States Army from June 30, 1942 through January 1, 1946.  He served in the 411th Amphibious Engineers overseas in the Pacific for three years.  The mission of his battalion was to assemble boat parts in New Guinea, making Landing Barges/LCT used in landing on  the beaches.  He also served in administration work having charge of four companies in the battalion doing paperwork, service work and payroll. 

Prior to his time in the service he worked for PP&L.  After serving his country, he was with the Prudential Insurance Company working as an agent and Sales Manager for 37 years, retiring in 1982.   He was a member of the Life Insurance Underwriter’s Association and was instrumental in forming the Columbia and Montour Life Underwriter’s Association where he was an instructor and director.   

A graduate of the Dale Carnegie Human Relations Course, he was instrumental in bringing the Dale Carnegie course to the Sunbury area.

 Mr. Hurnyak was a member of the First Baptist Church of Danville where he was a Trustee for two terms.  He also served as a Sunday school teacher, church usher and was a member of the Adult Fellowship Class where he took attendance.  An avid golfer, he was a member of the Frosty Valley Country Club. He assisted senior citizens completing Income Taxes

at the Pine Street Lutheran Church in Danville PA.  Mr. Hurnyak owed much of his longevity to regular exercising at the Danville Area Community Center.  Andy was known as a dedicated Philadelphia Phillies fan. 

He is survived by the love of his life, Georgine Eames Hurnyak whom he married January 16, 1946. They were married 66 years. He is also survived by his son Allen Hurnyak and his wife Laura of Clarks Summit PA and his daughter, Marna Brosious and her husband Tim of Northumberland PA.  Also surviving are four grandchildren; Eric Hurnyak and his wife Carol; Michael and Kaitie Robertson and Kimberly Buckley and her husband Brian.  He is also survived by three great-grandchildren; Alexa, Hannah and Rachel.  

He was the last surviving member of the Hurnyak family being preceded in death by John, Mary, Joseph, George, Michael and Steve. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Andy’s life to be held Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church 20 Brookside Drive (off Route 642 East) Danville PA with his pastor the Reverend Dr. Harry H. Wonderland officiating assisted by the Reverend Dawes Dunham.  Burial will be private.
